Snippets from the Captain
First round of the Winter Cup and there was an appropriate chill in the air. Hardly shorts weather but nobody told Jim Betts. Jim had the last laugh though because the clouds dispersed and the wind stayed quiet so the round finished sunny and warm. Jim looked comfortable.
It was a notable day on the North Course because it was one of those infrequent days when the men dominated the higher places, led by the old fox himself, Don Sheffield with Nett 46! Kevin Denton belied his years too with a sparkling 47. Good work Kevin. Lone woman waving the feminine flag among the 7 sub 50 placegetters was June Kennedy on 47. Good golf June.
Neville Shugg wasn't far off the pace with Nett 50, largely due to his miserly putting: just 18 putts for the round.
On the South, Stan Pulgies, fresh from a whirlwind tour of Asia that included about a dozen golf courses, showed the benefit of his recent experiences with a Nett 69 to win the day. And he did that despite a pretty sizeable tally of 39 putts in that score! Imagine what a score Stan would've had if he'd putted straight. Rumour has it that Kerry Eichner lipped out on the Birdie Hole which was a mighty effort considering that the 14th Hole is a very difficult hole. Disappointing for Kerry because the Birdie Hole has jackpotted to a sizeable amount. Not so disappointing for the rest of us.
AndyB was delighted when the last group came in. Roy Trotman carded a Nett 75 to move into 3rd place relieving Andy of the tedious task of sorting out a five-way countback between all the players on Nett 78. If you're interested, countbacks are done on the last 9 holes (or 6 on the North). In Stroke rounds on 18 Hole courses, you deduct ½ the handicap from the player's score to come up with a Nett score to compare with other players. On the North the deduction would be 2/5th of the player's handicap. Thankfully countbacks are a little simpler in Stableford and Pars because the handicaps have already been taken into account by the scoring system. In countbacks for them you compare the last 9 hole totals first. If it is still tied you compare the last 6 hole totals, and next, the last 3. If it is still tied you look at the last hole, then the hole before it and so on until one player scores better than the other on a hole. Before you ask, if it is still tied through all holes then it is actually a tie! Now, just imagine you were doing an extended countback in a Stroke round? You are deducting ½ handicaps then 1/3rd handicaps then 1/6th handicaps and finally 1/18th handicaps on the South (or 2/5th, 1/5th and 1/15th on the North)! In reality at Ascot Park we would usually give up quickly and give both players a prize. But 5 players might be a bit expensive. Thanks Roy!
