Thaxted Golf Report April 2022
Nineteen of us arrived at Thaxted Park Golf Club for the away Stableford round to be greeted by a chilly South Easterly breeze that had some players regretting their choice of shorts or lightweight clothing.
The blustery wind prevailed throughout the day although conditions had warmed up by the end of the round. The course was challenging as usual with its sloping fairways and inconsistent ball speed on the greens. It was also difficult to read the break on the heavily contoured greens which are also said to slope towards the sea. Nice advice if you know where the sea is! 3 putt greens often resulted.
Doug Andrews nephew, Sean Andrews, blitzed the field to win with 36 Stableford points. Doug’s brother Dennis also had one bright spot when he won NTP on the 8th. Meanwhile, Doug languished near the bottom of the field. His 22 points left him last in the Andrews Cup.
Keith Jacobs was 2nd with 32 points from Elliot Bishop in a countback. Elliot was more than happy with the bottle of red that was left for him as third place getter after Sean, then Keith had prior picks.
The NTP’s and Long Drives were spread around nicely. Kerry Eichner did amazingly well to stick the narrow top shelf of the treacherous 2nd green in two shots. Rob Gardner hit a great shot to the 3rd green. Dennis Andrews, who plays only half a dozen times a year was chuffed to win the 8th. The golf course won the long 11th Hole. At 170 metres and into the wind, no-one was on the Green! Neville Shugg hit a great wedge into the nasty little 15th Green. It is less than 90 metres from the white markers but oh so challenging. Andy Brauer won the Mens Long Drive on the 17th Hole. It is a daunting prospect to look across the canyon in front of the Tee block while deciding how far right you dare to hit it before the big gum tree and/or the deep gully swallows your ball.
The Womens Long Drive was on the same Hole. Apparently Sue Barker’s drive managed to claw its way across the gulch and on to the fairway whilst Chris Yates fell short and into oblivion. Winner, Sue Parker.
As a testament to the tricky conditions, not one genuine Birdie was recorded although eight players scored 4 Stableford points on at least one hole to each win a ball. Well done, Neville Shugg, Rob Gardner, Kerry Eichner, Elliot Bishop, Gary Hancock, Keith Jacobs, Col Kitson, and D Andrews.
The friendly staff welcomed us in the Clubhouse after the round for lunch, a drink, and presentations. Those who ordered pasties were particularly complimentary of their quality. Those who ordered pies or sandwiches also seemed pretty happy.
Keith Spencer is currently hampered by plantar fasciitis and could not play but he joined us in the Clubhouse for the social interaction that makes Ascot Park more than just a golf experience.
