Snippets from the Captain
It's good to be alive and playing golf when April turns on mild days and mostly gentle wins as was the case this week. Another big group of Northies contested the Executive Course and a smaller group of Southies took on the Patawalonga Course.
Sophie Hill normally busy on Wednesdays, took advantage of the school holidays to play on the North and finished well after a rusty start. Ross Higgins adapted well to his new North handicap with a Nett 50 to finish among the leaders. Geoff Molloy impressed by taking only 21 putts. Will Maybury and Mr Reliable, Noel Swalling, also putted well, needing only 23 putts each in their rounds.
On the South we welcomed back Steve Grant after his month of radiation therapy. He celebrated by scoring an impressive Nett 68. Surprisingly that wasn't good enough to win! Mike Stunden pipped him by one with his Nett 67! More surprising still, neither of them was close to Rob Gardner who carded a Nett 64 to comfortably win the day. That's pretty close to bushranger territory Rob. Even tougher luck story belongs to Rob Libralato. Having rejoined us after an eight year break, Rob has struggled to regain touch, but this week we saw glimpses of the golfer we know and he came in with Nett 68 only to lose out on third place by countback to Steve Grant. Any other week Rob and you'd come first. Tough competition when you're playing Ned Kelly and his gang.
Graham Wharton deserves a special mention this week. Not for his Nett score of 80 which is nothing special, it's pretty miserable even, you'd think, unless you knew that nearly a third of the Southies did worse! No, what is remarkable is that Graham took only 29 putts, fewer than anyone else! It makes you shudder to think about how much trouble he had with the rest of his game. Give Graham a good day with the driver and watch out Rob Gardner!
The Thaxted Away day was attended by 16 happy golfers. Who won? The Golf Course! On the whole, we struggled with the tricky greens and sloping fairways. Gary Hancock finished on top with 34 points ahead of Andy Brauer 33 and Mike Stunden 32. But the important thing about golf is the challenge. The enjoyment comes from pitting yourself against the course, whatever the odds, and if you come out on top, so much the better. Well our results were average and worse but we finished the day in the clubhouse still happy and smiling. The full report will be available on the website soon.
Clare Trippers should have received an April Update from AndyB. If you didn't get it let him know.
