Snippets from the Captain
The weather was good, especially for the Northies, although the wind strengthened considerably later in the day for the Southies. It was a big field with 26 on the North and 21 on the South. Perhaps they wanted to sharpen their games in anticipation of the upcoming Clare trip.
We had two guests this week, Rosalien van Loon on the South introduced by Marianne Harding and Matt Molloy on the North, introduced by dad, Geoff Molloy. Matt hails from Pt Lincoln where he plays on a 10 Handicap but AndyB decreed that he play off 6 with the Northies. Rosalien has intended to join us for a long time but hip problems have postponed that step. Both Matt and Rosalien figured in teams that did well this week.
It is hard to get good help. You'd think 4 grown men would be able to handle the simple task of putting out the NTP and Long Drive markers. Well DanA, RoyT, JimB and KerryE got off to a shaky start on the 2nd Hole when they didn't put out the coloured golf ball marker but just stuck the metal plate with the name sheet attached on to the green in its place. Something similar happened on the 5th except none of them was on the green so the name sheet and its metal holder were in the usual place alongside the Geen, but they forgot the coloured ball again. Kerry remedied this belatedly when he ran across to the 4th Green from the 6th fairway to ask our third group to take a marker ball with them. Things went much better then until the 12th Green where they were so excited by Jim Betts' good shot that they put the coloured ball out and wrote Jim's name on to the sheet. Pity it was the Women's NTP Hole! When AndyB's group came through his shot was inside Jim's and Elliot Bishop was quick to write Andy's name below Jim's but Andy was awake and quickly erased his own name leaving Jim to the glory of winning the Women's NTP which was duly announced at presentations! But wait, there's more! The team fell back into bad habits on the 16th when neither the coloured ball nor the recording sheet was put out! Oh the shame! Perhaps they were too busy winning the competition?
AndyB's latest long range weather check for Clare suggests that we'll have daytime temperatures in the low 20's falling to a relatively mild 9 or 10 degrees overnight, quite balmy for Clare! The forecast is for a low risk of rain too which is good for golf and socialising. Even the predicted winds could be relatively gentle! Maybe we'll be lucky with the weather once again.
One last thought about the Clare Trip; The Southies will need someone to step up and organise them on Wednesday 8th May when both AndyB and JimB will still be away in Clare. AndyB is asking around but if you can put your hand up to be there and run the South's competition on the day, he will be able to set you up with the necessary gear. Noel Swalling will be on duty as usual for the Northies.
