Glanville Par3 2023 Report
It was a good day for golf with mild temperatures, no rain, and enough breeze to test us. The Glanville Par 3 Course was in excellent condition and the 23 players who competed were in excellent spirits too. Peter Nicholls was a withdrawal after deciding he was not yet confident about walking a course without mechanical assistance but he made a welcome point of joining us at the Rosewater Hotel afterwards for lunch and presentations. Gotti Weishaupt was a reluctant late withdrawal with a back injury.
We hit off in six groups in a shotgun start from 4 Tees. In keeping with the Club’s aim to foster social interaction all groups included at least one player from the Northies and the Southies. It’s a great way to strengthen the bonds between players from each Course.
Gavin Whitfield distinguished himself early in the day by forgetting to bring his clubs! Many chuckles. Given permission to share any of his partners’ clubs, Gavin’s first hit of the day with Rob Gardner’s 8 iron finished a metre from the pin on the 5th Hole and he sank the birdie putt! It was a feat that won him NTP and Longest Putt on that hole. Pretty sad that no-one else sank a longer putt there all day!
Big winner on the day was Gary Rennie with firstly recorded a Nett 45 to win the 18 Hole Nett Stroke competition from Andy Brauer on 47 and Keith Chilman on 48. He then went on with his teammates Steve Grant, Keith Chilman and Eric Fiebig to win the Best Team Average score (52.5) just ahead of Andy Brauer and his team members Neville Shugg and Barrie Philps (52.67). Gary followed this up by winning the Off-the Stick Stroke competition in a countback from Andy Brauer with 56 strokes, just 2 over Par for the 18 holes. To round out his day Gary also won 1 NTP and 2 Longest Putts and managed 3 Birdies too. Away scores aren’t usually handicapped, but AndyB is thinking of making an exception in Gary’s case! Well done Gary!
Twelve of us recorded one or more birdies to each earn a golf ball as did placegetters in the 9 Hole competitions and the Off the Stick competition. Gavin Whitfield (23.5) picked up a wine for the best Nett score on the front 9 (discounting GaryR, AndyB, and KeithC, who were no longer eligible after winning wines in the 18 Hole Nett competition). Chris Yates (24.5) picked up the wine for the best Nett score on the back 9 in a countback from Bill Matthews and Colin Kitson. In the spirit of the day golf balls were also awarded to a couple of players whose off days left them otherwise unrecognised for the day. NAGA of the day undoubtedly went to Gavin Whitfield for forgetting his clubs. Growing old is a bugger, ain’t it Gav?
Gary Rennie might be excused for thinking his was the shining performance of the day, but no, that honour goes to Colin Kitson for his magnificent Hole in One on the 91 metre Third Hole. It was Colin’s first hole in one so his little victory dance on the tee block was understandable as he saw his lofted shot hit the green, bounce once and roll into the hole. Great shot Col. A special award of a bottle of wine was made to Colin in recognition of the feat.
As always, the atmosphere and the food we experienced at the Rosewater Hotel was excellent. The staff there really do add to the enjoyment we share at that venue. Undoubtedly, we will include the Glanville Par 3 and the Rosewater Hotel in our future programming.
