Ashbourne Picnic Day
Monday 13 March 2023
A Report from the temporary, acting, part time Captain, our own Vice Captain South – James Betts Esquire
Once again a perfect day for Golf, a mild cool day with an occasional breeze.
The event has always been popular with members and partners which was evidenced by the attendance of twenty four playing members and no less than ten non playing to enjoy the event in beautiful surroundings.
The lunch break saw many members with picnic fare and a good number took advantage of the barbecue facilities. The resulting aromas I think made the picnicer’ s wish they had also come prepared to partake.
Were the scores representative of the great conditions?? The truthful answer is “Yes”, to a small degree, but in the main the majority did not do themselves credit.
The Ladies surprised us all with an Adelaide Cup Sweep and a “how many lollies in the jar” competition which was a welcomed “first” for the event.
Betty Higgins was the sweet tooth that guessed the correct number of lollies in the Jar and the sweep winners will be provided in the weekly email. (Lucky Guess!!)
There were not too many surprises in the Long Drive and NTP’s competition with the regular names dominating. Speaking of regular names, the same goes for the main Stableford competition! But, more on that shortly.
The long drive for Ladies went to Sophie Hill and men’s to Ed Martin, much to the disappointment of Keith Jacobs and Dawn Delaney who thought they were well in contention for long drive honours. Maybe next year?
The Nearest the pin winners were;
Hole 3 – Quite convincingly, Neville Shugg
Hole 6 – won by Ed Martin from progressively closer in order, Gavin W then Marianne H. then Rob Gardner,
Hole 8 – Gary Rennie won, edging out Dawn Delaney
Hole 9 – Won by Marianne Harding displacing Dawn Delaney (Bad Luck Dawn! So near yet??)
The main Stableford competition was won by Keith Jacobs scoring an excellent 20 points.
There was a countback for second and third, both on 19 points, Marianne Harding prevailed with Rob Gardner a creditable third. Well played all of you.
During the Stableford event, a putting competition was conducted for the non-golfers with Donna Whitfield the winner and Janet Sheffield the runner up, both taking away the chocolates!
Congratulations ladies. The subject of whether this competition is for ladies only, or non players of both genders was raised and will be resolved by Committee.
Only one player managed birdie (or equivalent) and that was Barrie Philps, well done Barrie.
The hard luck story of the day belonged to Dawn Delaney! Edged out of the long drive and two NTP’s Dawn was awarded a ball for the NAGA prize winning on a countback from two others! That’s an award many of us have shared at one time or another. Well done Dawn! Remember winners are grinners!
The Captains giant chipper competition raised $44.00 for the club with Gavin Whitford edging out Noel Swalling for a lovely bottle of D’Arenberg Champagne. For Gavin, no doubt, a sweet taste of success after an otherwise ordinary days golf by his standards!
Next came the much coveted Bocce Competition which saw no less than twelve pairs taking part.
The competition was hot! It was tense! The sloping rink area again caused some controversy and challenges. Each of the “ends” took many twists and turns.
Eventually, after a gruelling knockout series, the final two pairs were decided - Margaret and Keith Jacobs vs Sandy Wong and Daniel Alexander.
A further tense battle of ends ensued with the Seniors, Margaret and Keith prevailing over the youngsters, Sandy and Daniel. The winners took away some great wine and the runners up really great chocolates.
Finally a sincere thankyou from me to;
