Willunga Report 2023
Twenty eager golfers attended the Willunga Away Day 2023 on a mild day perfectly suited to golf. The fairways were in excellent condition and the rough was as daunting as ever. Only the straight hitters or the very lucky can get around Willunga without losing a ball or two or three because of the tree choked gullies and creek beds that line or cross a number of the fairways.
The long Par 5 third Hole can be quite fearsome too with its large dam shielding the green. The greens are always a challenge to us, even more so this time because they had been cored recently and were pretty slow as well compared to our home courses. Maybe we’re gluttons for punishment because the overwhelming judgement was that we enjoy what Willunga throws at us.
Jim Betts was one player who appreciated the pace of the greens and also hits pretty straight so his score of 37 Stableford points won the day and gave him first choice of the wines. Naturally he took a red.
Col Kitson who has been in fine form of late came second with 35 points. He not only hit straight, he also hit long, so he also won the long drive and scored a couple of Birdies to round out his successful day.
Nick Kingsley, another long hitter, must have been pretty straight too because he came third overall with 34 points, picking up the third wine.
Andy Brauer, in a Jekyll and Hyde performance, picked up a wine for the best Front 9 with 18 points (after the three 18 Hole place getters were precluded from winning further wines). He followed it up with an unimpressive 9 points on the Back 9.
Keith Chilman was the star on the Back Nine, earning his wine with a score of 20 points.
Golf balls went to second and third placegetters on each Nine, Ed Martin and Jeff Rattigan (visitor) on the Front, and Gary Rennie and Keith Spencer on the Back.
Jim Betts complemented his good day by winning NTP’s on the 5th and 16th Holes. Gary Rennie won the NTP on the 3rd Hole. Keith Spencer who had a good day overall as well claimed NTP on the 12th, while Noel Swalling claimed his ball with NTP on the 14th. Col Kitson’s winning Mens Long Drive was quite prodigious, but sadly none of the Women found the fairway with their Long Drives.
The Team Average Score winners were Dan Alexander, Col Kitson, Jeff Rattigan and Milton Rattigan, averaging 30.0 points between them to earn APGC pens.
The Rattigan brothers were guests of Colin and appreciated the great atmosphere evident within the APGC group.
Runners-up in the Team Average were Jim Betts, Nick Kingsley, Sue Parker and Barry Barnes, who also earned APGC pens.
Eleven more golf balls were handed out to Birdie winners, Noel Swalling, Col Kitson and Dan Alexander, or to 4 pointer winners Keith Spencer, Gary Rennie, Jim Betts, Barry Barnes, Sue Parker, Col Kitson, Dan Alexander and Nick Kingsley.
All was not perfect for Col Kitson. Reportedly one of his drives clattered into a nearby tree before eventually rebounding some distance behind the Tee. June Kennedy’s misfortunes exceeded Col’s, and just about everyone else’s too. She lost 5 balls and nearly left her sunglasses behind as well as she left the pub. They received a ball each for giving us a laugh.
The Willunga Pub provided excellent food for us in their enclosed beer garden reinforcing the good impression we had last year.
Another great day, enjoyed by all, even those whose scores were at the wrong end of the scale.
We shall return.
