Clare Golf Trip, 1 - 4 May 2022
Clare Trip 2022 Report
Thirty-three happy Clareteers enjoyed superb weather during our major away trip of 2022. The Clare Caravan Park was an excellent home base for us catering for cabin users, vans and campervans. Great BBQ facilities abound and the undercover shelter area with its huge open fire allows Happy Hours, presentations and singalongs to proceed even when the temperatures drop or the rain falls. No wonder we keep coming back.
The Clare Golf Course was in magnificent condition with magnificently grassed greens that putted truly provided the pace and slope were correctly read. The fairways, too, were in good condition but the important factor was being able to strike the ball to the correct areas of the course to compensate for the sloping terrain. It contrasts greatly with the flatness of the Adelaide Shores courses.
Gary Hancock must love the Clare course because he was again the winner of the 36 Hole Aggregate Stableford competition with 79 which earned him a bottle of wine and a Drummond voucher. Pam Gardner had a couple of good rounds too to come second overall with 69 points, earning a bottle of wine. Four players finished with 59 points to share third place, costing Ascot Park Golf Club another 4 bottles of wine. Well done Col Kitson, Ray Perrott, Elliot Bishop and Felice Zaina.
Ascot Park is a generous club so wines were also handed out to the 18 hole winners on both Monday and Tuesdays and to the winners of each of the 9 holes on both days as well. To spread the winnings around, players are only eligible for one wine for each round. Nearly 4 dozen golf balls were also spread around the group for NTP’s, Long Drives, 4 point Holes, Birdies, some runner-up categories and for conspicuous feats or errors. Refer to the Summary of results to see the full rundown of prize allocations.
Because it is not all about winning some players were recognised for other things: Ray Perrott provided one highlight when he hit a ball out of bounds on the 18th Hole where it bounced along for a good while before it bounced back through the fence and rolled back down beside the green! Another hilarious moment (for some) was when Gary Hancock proved he was fallible on the 7th Tee when he hit his tee shot a whole 2 inches. Sideways. And then he wanted to put it back on the tee! Mal Axford had a big miss on his very last green when he had an airy when he was putting! Most unusual. Anyone in this Hits&Misses category also received a ball.
A similar category is the NAGA award which usually goes to someone with a sad story (or two) to tell. No-one gets the NAGA just for having a bad round but winners rarely get NAGA’s. This year’s NAGA went to Andy Brauer who forgot to put his golf shoes on before Monday’s round. Then he did it again on Tuesday! To make matters worse, he spent a lot of time the previous Saturday replacing all the sprigs on the shoes with nice grippy new ones, and then he gave them a liberal coating of Dubbin wax to make them waterproof and shiny. They looked lovely. His reward was a Grumpy Ball Marker.
Special mention goes to Dawn Delaney who took on the task of organising the social activities, and to husband Tim Delaney who was drafted in to assist. Many thanks go to the volunteers who worked the BBQ’s to prepare the food for our Tuesday BBQ meal. The Happy Hours and BBQ’s were exactly that, happy and buzzing with conversation and drink. Some tarried for karaoke sessions as well. The non-playing members of the Clare event enjoyed themselves together taking in the sights including a visit to an historic home. Dawn’s work was acknowledged with a bottle of wine whilst Tim was happy to receive a pack of beers which is more to his taste. Andy Brauer was similarly acknowledged for his organisational work with a bottle of wine.
A final thanks should go to President Colin Kitson who put in a great effort to promote a smoothly run event although his work was properly recognised during our presentations.. His discreet hand was in everything. Thanks Colin. There is a bottle of wine in our reserves and with your name on it!
