Ashbourne Picnic Day Report 2022
14 March 2022
What a superb day for a picnic! The weather was the best in memory, no sweaters required, and umbrellas strictly for shade. About 3 dozen of us attended with 26 taking on the golf course over 9 Holes.
It was great to discover that a sheltering roof has been erected to provide shade over the existing benches and tables. Rumour has it that there will be ten golf carts available on site next year. A new purpose built shed has already been erected to house them. Clearly the Ashbourne Private Golf Course is here to stay.
The course was in remarkably good condition for late summer although the greens were pretty slow and the slopes just as tricky as we expected.
As usual Handicapper AndyB provided generous handicaps. He also made every effort to mingle the Northies and Southies when setting up the playing groups. We need to do everything we can to foster social interaction between the two sections of our Club.
Ross Higgins made good use of his handicap to win the 9 Hole Stableford competition with 21 points. That was just good enough to edge out Don Sheffield’s 20 points, with Pam Gardner, also on 20 points, 3rd on countback.
Others to do well were Elliot Bishop and Barry Barnes on 19 points followed by Gary Rennie and Graham Wharton on 18. Well done all of you. Bottles of wine went to the three leaders.
Sneaky long hitter Keith Jacobs won the Mens Long Drive and Sandy Wong collected a ball too for winning the Ladies Long Drive.
The Nearest the Pin winners were Annette Huxholl, Rob Gardner, Gary Rennie and Ross Higgins. It was good to spread these ball prize wins among a lot of different players.
Surprisingly there was not one genuine Birdie this year, but ten individuals earned a ball each for scoring 4 points on at least one hole. Check the score summary to see the list of proud recipients.
Andy Brauer knocked Dennis Stafford off for the bottle of Sake in the Captain’s Giant Chipper Challenge which raised $60 for the Club. Suspicious members can rest assured that he never practises with the giant wedge between picnics. In fact, he nearly forgot to get it out of the shed to take to Ashbourne!
Twelve month’s bragging rights go to the winners of the Annual Ascot Park Bocci Championship. Andy B is happy to brag that he and Neville Shugg were victorious over Betty & Ross Higgins 7 to 1 in the final. Wines and glory to the winners and chocolates and just a little less glory to Ross and Betty. An appreciative audience of also-rans applauded the combatants and freely offered commentary.
Thanks to Social Committee workers Keith Jacobs, Annette Huxholl, and Dawn Delaney for their behind the scenes preparations, not to forget President Colin Kitson’s tireless work either. Special thanks to Jim Betts great work assisting AndyB. Actually, thank you to everyone who attended. So many Ascot Park members regularly do their bit willingly to keep the Club vibrant.
Just taking part in events enriches the whole Club and justifies the effort in setting them up.
Ashbourne really is an ideal opening away event in a beautiful setting.
