This week's Stableford was a great dress rehearsal for Clare not just because it was Stableford but also because the weather was just what we might expect in Clare next week: no rain, daytime temperatures below 20 while we're playing, and teasing glimpses of the sun. The winds were cold enough for Clare too although AndyB is hopeful that they'll be lighter in Clare.
Neville Shugg had a good day with 32 points and was the impressive early clubhouse leader for the Northies. Noel Swalling suggested that they might have to send Neville back to the Southies but he relented when Dennis Stafford came in at the tail of the field with 33 points, saying, 'OK Neville, you can stay!' Dennis must be pleased with his good form.
Congratulations to the other players who scored well. AndyB points out that the better tactic might have been to protect handicaps this close to the Clare Trip. A couple of the Northies and at least one Southie will arrive in Clare one shot poorer! On the other hand, Don Sheffield will be pleased to discover that his handicap has gone out one which he might need in Clare to compensate for the diminishing length of his drives. Loss of distance is a problem for most of us, but more so for the Northies. AndyB is aware of this and attempts to adjust handicaps accordingly.
Highlight of the day on the South was Gotti Weishaupt's birdie on one of the Par 3's. Unfortunately it was not on the 2nd Hole which was the day's Birdie Hole, but he did get to write down 2 for 5 on his score card. Great effort Gotti.
Clareteers, pack your bags and polish your clubs, were nearly on our way. AndyB might manage one more mailout before we go. With so many of us playing and so many carts being used he reckons it will be important to keep up the pace of play. It's easy to use carts inefficiently so there's a flyer in the works with some hints for cart users. Ready Golf is expected from all of us anyway so whether you are driving or walking move to the ball quickly, choose your club while your partner plays, if possible, and be ready to hit promptly as soon as you are able. 35 players is a big number to get around so we will be hitting off from the 1st and 10th Tees.
