Snippets from the Captain
Despite a gloomy forecast of rain, this week's golf was shower free. It was a cold day of course and those who played certainly commented on the effect the strong North Westerly wind had on their play. Even the winning scores were not great but the grand total of 15 players that played, 6 on the North and 9 on the South, should be commended for their commitment to golf. AndyB is uncertain whether it was their scepticism about the Weather Bureau's competence, their love of golf, or creeping senility that drove them to play, but whatever their motivations they reaped the benefits of a better-than-expected day that even included brief periods of sunshine.
Noel Swalling had a good day, starting with a Birdie on the first hole, courtesy of a gobbler. He had another gobbler later on as well, so those two successful putts from off the green probably ensured that he won the day. Geoff Molloy reported that one of his drives actually plugged in the fairway whilst Dennis Stafford reckoned the pins were in very difficult positions too. No wonder scores were pretty low.
Annette Huxholl, if you are keeping count, not one female featured in the first six placings on the North. Oh! Yeah. There were only 6 players on the North! That must mean that none of the girl's team played! Sensible, or scared?😀😀😀
Scores were low on the South too but Jim Betts prevailed over Gavin Whitfield in a countback with 33 points, pretty good in the circumstances. AndyB believes that Graham Wharton 4 putted twice. It might delight more vindictive members of the Club that he was using the putter he won as first prize in the raffle at the Mid-Year Dinner, but Graham says that the putter is great and he just has to get used to it. Graham does actually deserve recognition as one of the best putters playing the South Course.
The Mid Year Dinner was a huge success and a great time was had by all. Congratulations to Peter Nicholls, Dennis Stafford and Andy Brauer who all received personalised ball markers in recognition of their 15 Year memberships. President Col Kitson had done his research and highlighted their achievements within the Club as players and members. In accepting his award, Peter Nicholls took the opportunity to say applaud the positive effect that the increased numbers of active female members has had on the Club. Well said Peter.
AndyB was formally honoured by being made the 8th Life Member of the Club, joining Mal Stafford as the current living recipients of the award. In accepting the award Andy acknowledged the many members, past and present, whose various contributions have made and continue to make Ascot Park the vibrant Club that it is. So much of that is given freely and often unrecognised but it is the lifeblood that makes us strong as a Club.
Jim Betts had an especially good time during the raffle, winning big and going home with several bottles of wine. Nick Kingsley did well in the raffle too mainly because he bought the entire book of black tickets for the raffle in celebration of a big win on the gaming machines downstairs in the Marion Club. That's a nice subtle way to make a donation to the Ascot Park Golf Club Nick. AndyB was glad that he was given a fine bottle of wine as part of the Life Membership award because his customary large pile of raffle tickets wasn't worth a cracker in the draw! Oh well, the food was good and so was the company.
Special thanks to Dawn Delaney, Col Kitson, Ross and Betty Higgins Gary Rennie and Sandy Wong who, between them, organised the venue and its arrangements, the night's programme, the raffle, awards and prizes and the photography. Thanks to you it all ran smoothly.
