Snippets from the Captain
Early drizzle dampened our enthusiasm but the clouds soon ceased their dribbling and we were left with a coolish day and steady south westerly winds. The Northies did experience a brief shower, partly because they seem to be hitting off earlier every week. Poor Dennis Stafford arrived at 8.00am to discover that he'd been left behind! A quick phone call had Noel Swalling leaping in to action to rearrange the players still waiting at the 1st Tee to include Dennis who rushed to catch up with them.
David Trudgen and Neville Shugg distinguished themselves with +1 Par scores, the only players on either Course to avoid a negative Par score. Well done chaps. Best on the South was Roy Trotman on -1 from Elliot Bishop after a count-back. And what a count-back it was. Same score for the last 9 holes, same score for the last six, and same score for the last three! So, it was a countback hole by hole starting from the last hole. Roy had +1 on the 18th Hole bettering Elliot's +0, and winning the countback. Great for Roy and not so bad for Elliot either considering how much better he'd played this week compared to his previous week. On both Courses things became tight after the winners with multiple players all sharing similar scores.
It's a week late but apparently Gotti Weishaupt achieved something unusual with one approach shot. He pitched a ball on to the green, and pretty accurately too because it hit the pin. Normally the ball can drop straight in, or, more frequently, deflect away from the pin, or, most frustratingly, stop on the edge of the hole. Gotti's did none of these. Gotti's ball hit the pin then managed to spiral around it before eventually dropping in. You have to wonder what combination of trajectory, speed and flex in the shaft of the flag pin enabled such an effect. Partner Stan Pulgies said he'd never seen anything like it.
The Mid-Year Dinner is fast approaching, Tuesday June 25th at Club Marion. We are asked to arrive by 5.30pm for the 6.00pm dinner. As usual, the Club is looking to provide members with a subsidy on their meal. Details of that will be made known soon. If you wish to make an application to join us, get in touch with Dawn Delaney or Colin Kitson to see if there are places available.
