Snippets from the Captain
Sure, it was a Winter's day so the temperatures remained low but the weather was far kinder than early forecasts had led us to expect. The winds were not too bad, there was sunshine at times, and even the Southies finished before anything more than a few drops of rain sprinkled down. In short, a good day for golf!
Sandy Wong! You champion! Sandy set the North Course on fire this week with a blistering Nett 41 in the Stroke round. That's 9 under par and rare territory for any golfer. Great score Sandy. Russell Baker and David Jarman came equal second with Nett 47's, great scores that almost looked ordinary in comparison. Don Sheffield rounded out the complement of sub-par golfers on the North with Nett 49. Well done all!
It was good to see Brian Lawrie back out on the North Course again for the first time during the Regular Season. He was a little rusty but didn't disgrace himself. It's good to see you out with us again Brian.
Andy Brauer did pretty well himself to lead the Southies home with Nett 68 a couple ahead of Roy Trotman who was 2 under par with nett 70 and Jim Betts with Nett 72, par for the Course. Andy dispelled gleeful anticipation of his losing strokes from his handicap by insisting that the vagaries of our handicapping system actually result in little handicap movement after stroke rounds on the South. So it proved with a change of handicap happening for only one of the round's top five players, and his handicap went out! AndyB can report that his own handicap remained static after losing only 0.4 from his handicap because one of his previous 8 best rounds fell out of his last 20 rounds and no longer counted in the calculations.
Gavin Whitfield has come to our attention occasionally for misdemeanours with his remote-controlled buggy. He certainly came to AndyB's attention this week when he made a huge clattering noise just as Andy was playing his 2nd shot on the 18th Hole. Gavin's partners all spun around to see Gavin fallen on his back and rolling in the fairway! It turns out that Gavin, having played an excellent and longer drive, had decided to sit on his buggy and watch Andy's shot. So, watching Andy, Gavin sat back on to his buggy seat. Unfortunately, as he sat, he activated the remote control in his pocket, so the buggy moved on as Gavin sat! Oops, no seat, just grass! Luckily, the only damage was to Gavin's dignity. The best advice that can be given to the owner of a remote-controlled buggy is, 'Never turn your back on the little B......!' The next best advice is to never put the remote in your pocket unless you have locked its controls. The third best warning is to make sure you are looking at the correct electric buggy when you press the 'Go' button. It's embarrassing to keep pressing and staring at an un-moving buggy while your own buggy careers off behind you towards disaster.
